On Thursday 23rd October, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Minister did the handing over ceremony through the Deputy Chairman of the Kambia District Council, Foday Bangura.

The Minister also handed over the Bill of quantities which contains the specifications of the proposed building to the Council officials and performed the turning of the sod ceremony signalling the formal commencement of construction work.

Thursday’s handing over of site and turning of the sod ceremony in Kambia will be replicated in Bo District, Kenema District, Bombali District, Kono District & Freetown City Councils over a five-day period.

These councils constitute the last batch of councils to benefit from the capacity building intervention of the Decentralisation Secretariat which aims at providing councils the opportunity of working in a congenial atmosphere.

Already, Bo City, Makeni City, Kenema City, Port Loko District and Western Area Rural District Councils have all received new offices through the intervention of the Decentralisation Secretariat.

A view of the meeting in progress

Speaking at the ceremony in Kambia, the Hon. Minister Dauda Kamara praised the effort of the Decentralisation Secretariat to get local councils working in a proper footing. He noted that real progress at the central level is contingent upon a corresponding progress at the local level.

He also appealed to the people of Kambia District to support the construction project by helping to police the premises and the properties.

The Director of the Decentralisation Secretariat, Alhassan Kanu said the commencement of construction of an office for Kambia District Council has brought tremendous relief to the Chairman and his team who have been pleading for this intervention for some time now.

Kambia District Council Chairman, Samuel Sankoh, used the opportunity to appeal to various communities in his locality to honour their tax obligation and to pay their dues to authorities mandated by law to collect such taxes.
